about

Ryan Cook & Sunny Acres- Hot Times- LP (No Scene Records)

Named the 8th best Country album of 2008 by Country Music News (Canada).

Produced by Scott Ferguson (The Rankin Family) and Ryan Cook, "Hot Times" is a bouncing collection of harlequin characters and slapstick stories with a brooding undercurrent. Some of Cook’s inspiration can be attributed to obscure performers from the 1950’s and 60’s, such as Little Jimmy Dickens & Roger Miller. Little Doves, Sharpest Knife and …Between The Buried and Me reveal the darker side of small town life, summoning the subtle nuances of Cook’s punk and heavy metal background. “Hot Times” was released on February 29, 2008, with special guest appearances from award-winning bluesman John Campbelljohn, Konrad Pluta, and members of Prince Edward Island’s Gordie Mackeeman & The Rhythm Boys.

Track Name: PRETTY SURE
LYRICS

Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat
And I'm pretty sure you've seen em when they're walking down the street
And I'm pretty sure that every guy feels the same as me
Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat

Well I'm pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to keep
I had one down in Canso and she walked right out on me
She was tall and thin, 5 foot 10, with legs from here to there
But she didn't want my little sea-shore flowers in her hair

Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat
And I'm pretty sure you've seen em when they're walking down the street
And I'm pretty sure that every guy feels the same as me
Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat

Now I'm pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to tame
Cause I had one down in Yarmouth and she wouldn't take my name
She said i don't like your milk and I think you cooks are all the same
Well I'm pretty sure that she can go and she can keep her name

Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat
And I'm pretty sure you've seen em when they're walking down the street
And I'm pretty sure that every guy feels the same as me
Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat

Now I'm pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hot
When they're wearing leather miniskirts and hanging in the parking lot
So beautiful, they look like little horsey's when they trot
They jump up on the hood of my car and I toot my horn a lot

Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat
And I'm pretty sure you've seen em when they're walking down the street
And I'm pretty sure that every guy feels the same as me
Im pretty sure that pretty girls are pretty hard to beat

Track Name: LOVIN
LYRICS

You, you are the reason im home every night.
Watchin moonlight and holding you tight, is my night life.
You, you are the reason im staying up late.
Every night is a date... and I cant wait.. to see you my baby

Ill be loving you baby till the end of time… down the line… no end in sight
Ill be loving you baby till the day I die…. And that aint a lie… the way you got me feeling tonight.

You, you is a gal who never done me wrong. You’re a beautiful song and I wanna sing you girl all night long.
You, you are a place I like to be, a beautiful view from a hotel room, in a big city.

Ill be loving you baby till the end of time… down the line… no end in sight.
Ill be loving you baby till the day I die…. And that aint a lie… the way you got me feeling tonight
Ill be loving you baby till the end of time… down the line… no end in sight
Ill be loving you baby till the day I die…. And that aint a lie… the way you got me feeling tonight.

Track Name: BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME
LYRICS

Picking on some jersey cow
Aint worth a dime, no how
Makes me old fore I’m grey
She chews more than she pays

I had bull now he’s an ox
And he can pull a tonne of rocks
Had a wife she disappeared
She can go, don’t need her here

Someday when the pastures are dry
Someday when my hound-dog cries
Them cattle will shut off and be
Between buried and me

In the noon day sun, life moves slow
No rain on the radio
The summer’s dry, and its quiet out there
The summer’s dry, and its quiet out there

Someday when the pastures are dry
Someday when my hound-dog cries
Them cattle will shut off and be
between the buried and me

Track Name: GASPEREAU VALLEY (ORIGINAL)
LYRICS

I got me, a friend in the valley and oh she loves the music, all the sounds set her free, believe me
I got me, a truck in the valley, a 92 Sierra, 305 with a 4 wheel drive, believe me
I got me, a friend named Tennessee and he plays old Country music, the way it used to be, believe me

Hot times, summer in the valley, weeping like a willow tree, young rivers and common loons, picking apples and picking tunes
There's a blue moon in the sky, in the Gaspereau valley.

I got me friends in the valley and in the summer they have a corn-boil, one year they invited me, believe me
And once I had me, a girl in the valley and she drove 100 miles at 3:00am just to drink with me, believe me

Hot times, summer in the valley, weeping like a willow tree, young rivers and common loons, picking apples and picking tunes
There's a blue moon in the sky, in the Gaspereau valley.

Now I got me, a new-born baby, she weighed in at 7 pounds, mother named her Sara Lee, believe me
And one day she, is gonna call me daddy and I'll treat her like no other and you'll agree I'm a good daddy, believe me
And when she's old, ill tell her of the lies I told one night in an old saloon, in the Gaspereau valley, believe me

Hot times, summer in the valley, weeping like a willow tree, young rivers and common loons, picking apples and picking tunes
There's a blue moon in the sky, in the Gaspereau valley.

Track Name: CHILDREN SMILED
LYRICS

Once, once in awhile
When children smile
I feel like a child
three feet high, tender and wild
Cowboys and Indians
in the noon day sun… when you were the ones that I called Nan and Gramp well you have

A home that makes me smile… a deer stand that took a while for me to find behind an old rock pile
In the noon day sun… we bailed hay all night and day on a Massey red and on your head a foam ball cap, I sat on your lap…. when I was a troubled child… when you were alive and children smiled

Once, once in awhile
When a baby cries
I feel like a child
Meek and mild, on grandmas knee
the novelty
of Gospel songs, the organ calls, take me home

take me home and make me smile… 8 tracks and Cadillac’s, saying grace, keeping faith in the noon day sun
you were the ones, who showed me love, you believed in God, and it showed a lot…
you sang songs… did no wrong… I was a troubled child… when you were alive and children smiled.

Track Name: CAN'T WIN FOR TRYING
LYRICS

You left me this morning, crying in the street
You looked like a zombie, dead on your feet
You sure don’t love me, and that aint a sin
But you keep me tied up in a love I cant win

I cant win for trying
Cant win your love
I cant win for trying
So maybe I just give up?

You called me this evening, and I picked right up
Said that you met somebody, and I almost threw up
You said that you kissed him, and it tasted so sweet
I must look like a target, with a heart that don’t beat!

I cant win for trying
Cant win your love
I cant win for trying
Maybe I just give up?

So I milked my jersey, I brought your momma some cream
I told her my story, and asked why you were so mean?
She said she was sorry, and you were maybe confused
I told her to save it, there just aint no dog-gone use!

I cant win for trying
Cant win your love
I cant win for trying
Maybe I just give up?

Track Name: SHARPEST KNIFE
LYRICS

I like going up
But I hate coming down
I like pretty girls
But they don’t want me around
Sometimes I wanna lay down and die
Sometimes I cry
But I like it when the sun comes up
And settles in the sky

I guess all my life
Ive never been the sharpest knife
I once had that look in my eyes
I felt I was alive, 2 feet on the ground
Until I got knocked down
and now im tired and I want to stand up

I don’t like growing up
It hurts my bones
I like being free
But I hate when im alone
I like money in the bank
But theres never any there
I like it when theres gas in my truck
So I can get away from here

and lord when that sun goes down
And im alone in this one horse town
I think of the things in my life, my mama and daddy
Growing up in church, and oh how it hurts
I pray that you help me up

I like drinking beer
But it don’t like me
I like summertime
But I don’t like the heat
I don’t like my job
And I don’t like the pay
I want to be happy with life
Im gonna get there some day

I guess all this time
Ive never been the sharpest knife
I once had that look in my eyes
I was alive, 2 feet on the ground
Until I got knocked down
and now im tired and I wanna stand up

Track Name: LITTLE DOVES
LYRICS

Hey little baby, where you going, who you seeing, my little dove?
How’s your momma, I hope she’s better, if you see her send her my love
I been running around town, for days now,
I’ve been running around town, and I’m thinking about you now
And your momma, I hope she’s better, if you see her then send her my love

The thing about this town, it’s a small place, don’t stop smiling, my little dove
When you get lonely, see Mister Leonard, sit in his parlor and chat for a while
But don’t go running around town, with a bad crowd
Don’t go running around town, don’t you let your momma down
Keep on walking, keep on smiling, watch your step now and don’t fall in love

I got to go now, tell your mother I love her, my little dove
Don’t say you seen me, here drinking, and losing money in this “Time-Out Lounge”
Cause I’ve been thinking bout leaving, for days now
I’ve been thinking bout leaving this whole town got me down
Keep on walking, keep on smiling, watch your step now and don’t fall in love
